Beyond Books: Bringing Live Voices and Trivia into the Mix

When we launched the early alpha versions of Audio Realm, we saw it strictly as an audiobook co-player. The goal was simple: let people listen to chapters together in real-time. But as we observed how our community behaved, we noticed something fascinating. Users weren't just listening to books in silence. They were using our chat boxes to react to plot points, discussing complex character motivations, and cracking jokes. They were treating each session as an interactive social event.

We realized that keeping people connected meant expanding our vision. Audio Realm needed to move beyond being a media player; it had to become a **complete social audio hub**. Here is the story of how we integrated real-time WebRTC voice channels and multiplayer trivia games to transform passive co-listening into an active night in with friends.

Integrating Low-Latency Voice Chat (WebRTC)

The first step in adding social layers was obvious: users wanted to talk. Running a secondary Discord call alongside our website was clunky and required setting up audio redirects to avoid echo issues. We needed voice chat integrated directly into the web application.

We chose WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) to power our voice channels. WebRTC allows peer-to-peer audio connections directly between users' browsers, bypassing intermediate servers to keep latency extremely low (under 100 milliseconds). This means conversation feels natural, without the awkward "overtalking" that happens on high-latency lines.

To make voice chat pleasant while a book is playing, we designed an **auto-ducking system**: * When someone in the room speaks, the application automatically lowers the volume of the main audiobook track by 60%. * As soon as they stop speaking, the volume smoothly fades back up to its original level. This ensures that narrators never drown out conversation, and you don't have to keep manually adjusting the volume slider to hear your friends.

The Rise of Co-Listen Trivia

Once voice chat was running, we wanted to add a playful group activity. Many of our users listen to educational history podcasts or science series. We thought: *What if the room host could trigger a multiplayer trivia game directly related to what the group is listening to?*

We built an interactive trivia engine that runs inside the room dashboard. When the Host starts a trivia game: * The timeline pauses, and the screen transforms into a multiplayer game board. * Multiple-choice questions are pushed in real-time to all listeners' devices using WebSockets. * A 15-second timer counts down, and players score points based on speed and accuracy. * A live leaderboard shows who is the most attentive listener in the room.

This simple addition turned educational co-listening into a friendly competition. It keeps groups engaged and makes listening parties feel like a trivia night at a local pub, all from the comfort of their homes.

Creating a Complete Shared Space

By blending voice channels, custom themed backgrounds, and trivia games into the core sync player, we have built a social space that respects the medium of audio while embracing the power of community. Audio Realm proves that co-listening can be just as engaging, active, and social as a multiplayer video game. We are excited to keep adding features that bring people together through the power of sound.
